Russia Reinstates Direct Flights to Iran
The ban, imposed by Moscow amid rising security risks, was officially lifted after what Russia’s civil aviation agency Rosaviatsia called a “continuous analysis” of threats to civil aviation. In a statement released Friday, the agency confirmed: “Rosaviatsia continues to monitor the situation in the Middle East. If there are any significant changes, airlines will be promptly informed.”
Global airlines, including Lufthansa, Emirates, and Air France-KLM, had also rerouted or canceled flights to avoid the volatile airspace above Iran, Israel, Jordan, and Iraq. According to Eurocontrol, the pan-European air traffic network, approximately 650 flights were canceled during the peak of the hostilities.
The first Iranian commercial flight to land in Russia post-ban arrived at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo Airport on Friday, operated by Mahan Air and originating from the northeastern Iranian city of Mashhad. A return flight departed shortly after noon.
Meanwhile, Russia’s national carrier Aeroflot has resumed ticket sales for its Tehran route, with the first flight scheduled for July 4. Service between the two capitals will run three times weekly.
Tensions erupted on June 13 when Israel launched a series of targeted airstrikes against Iranian nuclear and military infrastructure, killing senior commanders and nuclear scientists. The Israeli government framed the strikes as a preemptive effort to halt Iran’s alleged nuclear weapons ambitions.
In response, Iran—which denies seeking nuclear arms—retaliated by firing ballistic missiles and deploying kamikaze drones at Israeli cities, condemning the Israeli attacks as unprovoked.
A U.S.-negotiated truce has since taken effect, with both Iran and Israel claiming to have
achieved their strategic goals.
