Russia Criticizes NATO's Defense Timeline

(MENAFN) During a discussion at the Valdai Discussion Club on Friday, senior Russian Foreign Ministry official Vladislav Maslennikov highlighted what he described as a contradiction in NATO's strategy.

He pointed out that while the alliance anticipates a potential armed clash with Russia within the next five years, it is not planning to raise its defense expenditure to 5 percent of GDP until 2035.

This critique follows a summit in The Hague earlier this week, where members of the US-led alliance committed to boosting their military budgets to 5 percent of GDP by 2035.

The justification offered by NATO leaders was the “long-term threat posed by Russia to Euro-Atlantic security.”

US President Donald Trump, who has regularly urged European partners to contribute more to collective defense, praised the agreement as a “monumental win.”

Maslennikov, who leads the Department for European Cooperation at the Russian Foreign Ministry, challenged the consistency of this approach.

He questioned how the alliance could justify a delayed financial commitment while simultaneously warning of a possible near-term military escalation.

“It’s not just the logic that’s flawed — the arithmetic doesn’t add up either,” Maslennikov stated. “If the public is being told that Russia is expected to launch an attack by 2030, then why is the European Union only aiming to be fully prepared by 2035? It doesn’t make much sense,” he contended.
