Trump Cancels Considerations to Ease Iran Sanctions
Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, declared on Thursday that Tehran had emerged victorious after nearly two weeks of direct conflict. The fighting erupted when Israel assassinated high-ranking Iranian commanders and launched strikes on Iranian nuclear sites.
The escalation culminated in U.S. military involvement, deploying bunker-buster bombs against Iran’s fortified Fordow facility and two other key targets.
Posting on Truth Social Friday, Trump—who had vocally supported Israel’s offensive—rejected Khamenei’s victory claims. He slammed the remarks as false, stating: “blatantly and foolishly” made, and dismissed them as “a lie” and “not so.”
Trump revealed he had been preparing to potentially lift some of the harsh sanctions imposed on Iran, but immediately abandoned the effort after hearing Khamenei's comments.
“Instead, I get hit with a statement of anger, hatred, and disgust, and immediately dropped all work on sanction relief, and more,” he wrote.
Despite asserting that Khamenei would have been “an easy target,” Trump said he knew the supreme leader’s location during the conflict but chose not to authorize a strike.
“I SAVED HIM FROM A VERY UGLY AND IGNOMINIOUS DEATH, and he does not have to say, ‘THANK YOU, PRESIDENT TRUMP!’” he added.
Trump also claimed to have intervened to prevent a large-scale Israeli air assault that would have resulted in significant Iranian casualties, describing it as “the biggest attack of the War, by far.”
In earlier statements, Khamenei asserted Iran’s counterattacks had left Israel “practically knocked out and crushed,” which he said forced U.S. forces to intervene on behalf of its ally.
